In July 2024, a Farmers Training program focused on Intercropping in Rice Farming using the SRI Method was conducted at Palsada GP, with participation from 35 members. The training was led by two KVK scientists: Laba Soren from KBK Nuapada and Govind Chandra Sahoo, also a scientist. This initiative was organized by the Unchin Foundation (SPV) in collaboration with Lokadrusti (IA), and it included farmers from the Panchayats of Domjhar. Intercropping, which involves cultivating multiple crops simultaneously in the same field, offers numerous advantages for farmers, including: - Enhanced soil health: Intercropping can improve soil characteristics, boost carbon and nitrogen levels, and create habitats for beneficial microbes. - Increased crop yield: This method can lead to higher productivity compared to traditional monoculture practices. - Improved pest management: Intercropping can deter or trap pests while attracting beneficial insects. - Reduced reliance on fertilizers: The practice can lessen the need for synthetic fertilizers as the crops naturally enhance soil fertility. - More efficient resource utilization: Farmers can optimize the use of water, nutrients, and space through intercropping. - Better weed control: This approach can inhibit weed growth in the spaces between rows. - Higher profitability: Secondary crops can yield additional income, providing a safety net if the primary crop fails. - Greater biodiversity: Intercropping contributes to the preservation of biodiversity and ecological balance.
