Unchin Foundation organised Farmers Awareness Program on Precision Farming dated 19th June 2024 to help Growers/farmers to measure crop health from preseason to harvest, allowing them to farm more efficiently, profitably, and sustainably. The precision farming awareness program was delivered and demonstrated through precision farming mobile app by Dr Sanjukta Badhai, Director Unchin Foundation at two different cluster area at Khariar, Nuapada District. A total of 34 farmers (Female: 15 and Male: 19) from Durkumunda and Palsada village participated in the awareness activities. The farmers were aware about how they can monitor remotely about their farm data through mobile that can help them to take decision to adopt proactive measure and action to increase their farm productivity. The farmers learned about mobile app that allow farmers to monitor soil moisture levels accurately, enabling them to adjust irrigation schedules based on actual crop requirements. This ensures that crops receive adequate moisture without wasting water resources. The usage of mobile app to access real-time weather data helps farmers take action regarding irrigation, pesticide application, and harvesting schedules, key features of mobile phones for crop monitoring through satellite data. The farmers were provided with the training material in local language for easy understanding about the tools and technologies used for precision farming.
Soil Health Management: Satellite-based rapid soil nutrients (N, P, K, SOC, pH)
Crop Health Management: Pest and disease forewarning.
Crop Health Management: Image-based diagnoses for pest and disease
Package of practices: Crop and location-specific advisories
Irrigation Water Management: Satellite-based soil moisture estimation
Through the awareness program, Unchin Foundation identified 20 progressive farmers to pilot a project model to provide digital farming solutions to monitor High Protein Rice/Black Rice cultivation from land mapping till harvesting. Through the pilot project the farmers, the farmers were informed how this Mobile app-based crop monitoring offers several significant benefits for small and medium-sized agri firms in terms of early detection and intervention allows for proactive measures to be taken, reducing the risk of crop loss, and increasing overall yield. With access to accurate data on soil moisture, weather conditions, and crop growth patterns, farmers can optimize resource allocation, including water, fertilizers, and pesticides. This leads to cost savings and reduces environmental impact.
Precision farming technologies and practices enable farmers to minimize their input usage, thereby decreasing the likelihood of environmental pollution. These advanced agricultural technologies facilitate better monitoring and management of crops, which can mitigate the risks associated with pests and diseases while enhancing soil health. In our precision farming training program, we educated farmers on how to leverage the advantages of this approach
Enhanced crop yields: Precision farming assists farmers in optimizing their crop production
Cost reduction: This approach allows for more efficient use of resources, leading to lower operational costs.
Greater sustainability: By managing inputs and nutrients more judiciously, precision farming minimizes fertilizer waste and nutrient runoff
Informed decision-making: Farmers can make better-informed choices regarding their crops, which improves crop health and lowers the chances of failure.
Diminished environmental impact: Precision farming contributes to a reduced ecological footprint for agricultural practices.
Efficient water usage: This method promotes the effective use of water resources
Prevention of soil erosion: Precision farming techniques help to combat soil erosion and degradation.
Decreased chemical application: Farmers can limit the excessive use of chemicals through precision farming.
Remote monitoring capabilities: This technology allows farmers to oversee and manage their farms from a distance.
Accurate planting: Utilizing GPS technology, farmers can precisely map their fields, ensuring efficient crop planting.
